New Old Shop

Ain't she a beaut? I'm not sure what the original purpose of this building was, but on the back side there's a lean-to that was obviously a pig pen. It doesn't smell like there's been a pig in there for years though, and it seems like the building was used solely for junk collection. See the big grey thingy leaned up against the wall to the left? It's a slate slab from a pool table, 1" thick, 600 lbs, and dead flat. I'm going to build an assembly table from it. I want to find a hydraulic scissor lift table to use as the base to make the height adjustable. Add it to the list of projects...

Bench room...

...and machine room.

The building is in good shape, and has a cement floor. It'll take some fixing up but I think it'll work fine. I hauled away most of the scrap metal this afternoon after work, which included and old oil stove, three lawnmower engines, an old car door, two gas tanks, two water pressure tanks, 6 car rims, and what looks to be the complete exhaust system of a pickup truck.

One of three loads hauled away.

It looks tits Cody.

You're going to have a tonne of room there. The slate table idea is amazing.

Why do farmers always have tonnes of shit stored all over the place?

Thanks Ian.

It seems pretty universal, so many farmers are junk collectors. The people I bought this place from were worse than most. There's one building that's full of worn out tires, there's a shed full of old boxes of beer - most unopened, one shed with a crazy meat grinder collection. So weird...

Cody Bradford!! Dude what a rad homestead. Im assuming thats the house in the background behind your truck? I cant wait to see the shop finished and some rad product coming out. Ive got more wood than time to use it these days but its always fun to work vicariously through people more talented than myself. Take care and keep the posts comin.

Wardwell? What the? How the hell are you, and how did you find me here?

Yeah, that's my house in the background. I bought it off this old lady who's husband had died awhile back and it's in rough shape. I gutted the place and have been working on it for the last few months. There's a bunch of pics and stuff here:

What have you been up to?

Kinda creepy how people can stalk you down over the interweb isnt it... The real deal is I got here through Ian's blog which I got to through the I.P. newsletter. Im stoked that I found your little group though. Very inspiring. I am working the weeks doing carpentry in Invermere and whenever I can find time I run out to my parents farm where my shop is setup.

Clearly you're stalking me. I always knew you were a bit fruity. Good to hear your fancy 5-in-one isn't just sitting there rusting. Build anything cool lately? Are you still living in the same basement suite in Invermere? What's your plan dude, when are you going to grow up and make something of your life? Jeez...

And oh, Rane, I was thinking about you guys awhile back when I was cleaning all the junk out of my 'potential shop'. If you threw in some sheep wandering in and out and a cranky old Swiss man hobbling around it would've fit right in on the Zender ranch.

Yeah Max is getting some attention on weekends. I have 3 different projects in various stages of completion. Nothin too groundbreakin, an entry door in VG fir and aluminum, a wall cabinet in maple and probably imbuya to cover the electrical panel in my shop and 3 meditation benches in sapele, cherry and walnut for the 3 most important women in my life, mom, yoga instructor and the best wife anyone could ever hope for. So yeah got married but still in the dungeon. I might be getting the plans for the house we will be building in the spring this weekend. Dont worry the garage is plenty big enough for the Mini max and all the other fixins of a wood geeks shop. Im kinda stunned at how much self restaint you are showing with your bandsaw. I would have had that thing out sawing up anything wooden as soon as I set eyes on it. Whats wrong with you? Is this some kind of sadistic self-torture for other less reserved times of personal pleasuring? Funny thing, I ran into Stotts the other day. I hadnt seen him in about a year. Hes still pumpin out the timberframes up at the farm. I do miss it every once in a while, like when Im framing a house in the snow and its freezin ass cold. Seems so civilized to do things inside by a fire. Get that shop finished and start makin stuff Bradford, Ians doin it cant you? OK Ive ranted enough for about 4 posts. Have a good weekend.

Married? Yoga? Congrats. Wow, it's been awhile hey?

Congrats on the house, feel free to come up and finish mine off before you start yours if you want, for the practice. I'd say that you can 'store' your 5-in-one at my place too, but lets face it, it would just gather dust like the rest of my machines! Who new that my 'dust collector' would collect dust so effectively before it's even assembled?

It's not a matter of restraint that's kept me from firing up the bandsaw, but a lack of power! My electricians just finished up last week and I had them install 100amp splitters on either corner of my yard so I can run a proper service to any of the various buildings. I have to wire the building I want to use as a shop, and 'borrow' the variable frequency drive off my milling machine due to a lack of 3-phase power at my place. Before all that happens though I have some buggering around in the house. Me and my drywaller are like two ships passing in the night, but it looks like our schedules are finally going to match up next week, leaving me to set up the shop and get cabinets started - finally!!
